Mission and History of the Baltimore Design School
Baltimore Design School (BDS) is a Baltimore City public transformation school that offers a comprehensive college preparatory program that integrates design throughout the academic curriculum and provides Career and Technology Education (CTE) pathways. BDS fosters creativity and develops the academic and critical thinking skills of 6th through 12th grade students and prepares them for admission to college and careers in the design fields of Architecture, Fashion, and Graphic Design. The school opened in 2011 and in 2013 moved into its acclaimed facility in Station North, an arts and entertainment district. Currently the school serves students in grades 6 through 12 and is expected to enroll approximately 525 students for the 2021-22 school year.
Job Description – Development Operations Manager
The Development Operations Manager reports to the Director of Development and Board Support. The Development Operations Manager supports fundraising activities, including database management, grant proposals, annual operating appeals, capital campaigns, and special events. The Development Operations Manager provides support to the board and coordinates activities for the school’s Leadership Initiative, a comprehensive program designed to complement the school’s curriculum in enhancing the college and career readiness of students. The Development Operations Manager is also responsible for a range of bookkeeping duties, such as paying invoices and maintaining the accounting records for the non-profit.
Data and Financial Management
- Maintains database of foundation, corporation, and individual donor files
- Processes donations, including making bank deposits
- Tracks gifts and pledges, prepares and sends acknowledgment letters promptly
- Administers on-line donation platform
- Tracks restricted gifts and associated expenses
- Ensures the prompt payment of invoices and maintains accounting records
- Produces customized income/analytical reports
- Provides financial information to accountant and auditors
- Reconciles donor database, financial database, and bank statements on a monthly basis
- Coordinates all in-kind donations
Job Description – Development Operations Manager
- Fundraising and Donor Education
- Assists in supervising volunteers to support the school’s sustainable fundraising efforts
- Tracks and reports activities to the Director of Development and Board Support and oversight committee
- Supports regularly scheduled tours of the school and tracks follow-up with tour participants, documenting all contacts
- Events
- Provides coordination and support for fundraising and cultivation events as needed, including mailings, RSVPs, materials and event staffing
- Assists with logistics for events, including vendor arrangements, A/V services, registration
- Assists with the recruitment and coordination of event volunteers
- Board Support
- Attends meetings, distributes agendas and prepares minutes for Board, Executive and other committee meetings
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite and QuickBooks
- Experience with database and financial management
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Ability to organize and prioritize work
- Ability to work independently with little supervision
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively with Board members, staff, teachers, and students
- Two to three years of experience with fundraising operations and/or bookkeeping is required.
- Familiarity with the Benevon model of sustainable fundraising a plus.
Salary range: $35,000 – $40,000, commensurate with experience.
