CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA & Library and Media Specialist

Amanda Waggoner

Bio

Position: 2019-20 CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA serving within the BDS/MICA partnership. I am activating the library through creative programming that will increase engagement with the space and its resources (because #LitIsLit). I’m also piloting the Next Generation: College Buddy Program, which will connect 10th grade scholars at BDS with MICA’s students and campus in intentional, sustainable, and exciting ways.

Background/Expertise in Content Area: During my time as a student Loyola University Maryland, I read and wrote constantly in the English Literature, Peace and Justice Studies, and Honors College programs. As a Resident Assistant, I regularly collaborated with community partners to organize events centered around literacy, artistic advocacy, restorative and racial justice, and peace building.

I joined the BDS Family because…I wanted to meaningfully engage with youth and literature in creative spaces, continue my exploration of social justice through artistic mediums, and advocate for educational equity in a city that I deeply respect. Cultivating a love for literature at BDS offers me the unique opportunity to pursue my passions, apply my skill set, and connect with Baltimore’s amazing literary, activist, and creative communities.

Fun fact about me: I absolutely love sending and receiving handwritten letters. Poet Laureate Billy Collins has been one of my many pen pals!
