The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts is proud to announce the winner of the fourth annual Fred Lazarus IV Artscape Prize (The Fred). The winner is Brian High, a student at the Baltimore Design School. The prize awards $1,000 to a high school student artist living in Baltimore City as well as a stipend to produce a solo exhibition to be on display at the 36th annual Artscape, July 21-23, 2017.

New this year, the winner of The Fred’s work will be on display at Artscape on the median of Mount Royal Avenue in a new portable gallery built by Open Works. Artscape takes place on Mount Royal Avenue and Charles Street. Brian High is an 11th grader and architecture student at the Baltimore Design School. Brian’s interest in photography began around the age of 10 when he first started creating stopmotion animations using his model trains. In a natural progression from that stage and stemming from his study of railroading history, his interest has developed to visiting rail museums in the region and photo-documenting what he labels as “The Survivors.”

The Fred is a competitive program that seeks to recognize and encourage artistic student talent in Baltimore City. Applicants must be high school students who live in Baltimore City. The prize is held in conjunction with Artscape and named in honor of the Maryland Institute College of Arts’ long-serving president, Fred Lazarus IV. Mr. Lazarus was instrumental in launching the city’s annual Artscape festival, now the largest free arts festival in the United States.
