A group of BDS students joined students from a few other BCPSS high schools for the first African American Foodways Summit at Great Kids Farm yesterday! Students participated in panel discussions on food access, food waste and the history of the foods we eat in Baltimore today. They attended workshops on Afroecology, Black Farming, Food as Medicine, and more. Carleen From City Schools and Sache from No Boundaries Coalition hosted Jammin’ for Justice where students not only learned about advocacy, but also learned how to make strawberry jam which they were able to take home. Crystal Foreman of Holistic Wellness and Health lead a cooking workshop which tied in food nutrition to health and wellness. She lead an activity where students used organic vegetables from Great Kids Farm to make a delicious kale salad. Mecca Verdell of DewMore poetry led a poetry workshop for the students which yielded beautiful work from our BDS students who participated.
Chef Damian Mosley from @blacksaucekitchen spoke to students about the origins of the Jim Crow-era Shoebox Lunch and the inspiration for the delicious boxlunch her prepared with crunchy fried chicken, cabbage, beans and rice and pumpkin cake.
We even had time to visit the henhouse to see the majestic turkey, crooning roosters and gorgeous chickens. Everyone returned with all of their fingers
