May 20-21, 2024, BDS seniors of graphic design had their ‘final hurrah’ with an overnight trip up to New York City. The group visited the Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, Central Park, Times Square, and the Nintendo Store… “because, duh, graphic design students are gamers XD, ” according to Mx. Harris Waltuck – Graphic Design Pathway Teacher & Design Department Chair.
Students toured the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and viewed a breathtaking exhibit by Es Devlin, who has done stage designs for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s Superbowl performance, Adele, the Weeknd, Lady Gaga, and Miley Cyrus. Mx. Jenny De La Cruz – Interactive Media Production Teacher really enjoyed engaging with ’24 Bridget H. in an exhibit where video was projected on the exhibit walls. The artist in the video was explaining her studio process and what it means to be an audience of art/performance. De La Cruz described the surprise as the video “ends with the artist saying “and perhaps this wall in front of you isn’t really a wall, but a pathway forward,” and then opened up revealing the rest of the exhibition. So cool!!!” BDS ’24 Christian Buford said “the impact of the art and culture took [him] by surprise. The view and environment of NY were overwhelmingly beautiful and I loved it.”
’24 Tyron B. said the best part was the food. “The food trucks were amazing. So good, and affordable!” BDS ’24 Kayla S. said “the ramen at Totto Ramen was really good.” Kayla also echoed that the prices were really reasonable and the various restaurants and shops they visited.
Mx. Waltuck “loved seeing how excited the kids were to explore. We had them pick where they walked in museums, Central Park, Times Square…they’re about to go off into the world and it was cool seeing them make decisions on their own.” Buford agreed, citing his appreciation for exploring “the different little hidden areas all around NY you wouldn’t know about unless you were a local.”
Mx. Waltuck and Mx. De La Cruz took a ton of pics and shared “some of our adorable footage from the trip. Thanks so much to the BDS board for making this opportunity possible for our kiddos two years running!”
