A select group of current and future BDS Architecture students attended the annual ‘Designer for a Day’ event at CannonDesign Baltimore.  BDS was one of 10 middle and high schools invited to participate in this dynamic and engaging event, designed to expose youth to the array of professions within the design field.

They participated in mini-workshops with industry experts and heard from 3 current interns from Cristo Rey and Poly high schools and an intern from Morgan State Architecture.  The program commenced with a build challenge, where students were divided into teams to design and build a foam block prototype, and the winning team won the coveted Stanley Cup (branded by CannonDesign, of course).

Following is the day’s agenda:

  • The Impact of Design: Design leaders discuss the design process and current projects on the boards, which leads to a sketching vignette by the Cannon Principal.
  • Working With Other Disciplines: learning how complex teams coordinate across the firm while engaging CD engineers who lead a Spaghetti tower competition.
  • Utilizing Digital Tools: CD digital practice leads share how computational tools are utilized in the design process, including a VR demonstration of a current project.
  • Graphics + Marketing: Students learn how graphic design impacts CD’s marketing work for proposals and interviews.
  • Design Field Careers and Pathways include but are not limited to Graphic Design, Healthcare, Education, Civic & Community, and so many more.
  • Lunch
  • Q+A: The day ends with meaningful conversations with the students about planning their futures and the importance of goal setting and perseverance.
  • Each school liaison will leave with a personalized portfolio created beh
ind the scenes, highlighting the activities of the day.
  • There will also be a QR code for students to download a copy of the portfolio of the event. (Let’s save Mother Earth one piece of paper at a time).
