Baltimore Design School Architecture Pathway Seniors took an overnight trip to New York City to tour colleges with 5-year Bachelor of Architecture programs and visit Architectural landmarks. Students were impressed by the new skyscrapers and structures in Hudson Yards along the High Line, including Heatherwick’s The Vessel. They visited The Whitney Museum, appreciating how the Renzo Piano’s Museum design draws from its context at the end of the High Line. Students enjoyed the observation deck of One World Trade Center, where they had a bird’s eye view of the city from the tallest building in the United States, and explored beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park, including getting pizza at the famous Grimaldi’s. They toured Cooper Union and Pratt Institute, learning about the admissions process and portfolio requirements at the two schools. They even saw BDS Alum Jule Byrd ’24 at Pratt, working hard on her studio projects! Students were inspired by the trip to work harder on their portfolio pieces and even to redesign Baltimore’s waterfront after seeing New York’s iconic public spaces.
Here are a few student reflections on the trip:
“My favorite part of the New York City trip was the first portion of the trip to the High Line, when I saw many architectural buildings that fascinated my creativity. One thing that surprised me about New York City was that each building didn’t take away the glory of the other one. This trip inspired me to start becoming more creative with the buildings that I end up designing.” – Victor Joaquin-Normendez
“The most memorable part of the NYC trip was going to the World Trade Center, looking at the whole city in the sky from the country’s tallest building. I was impressed by the accomplishments of students in the different 5-year architectural programs and how they had different
methods of working. This trip inspires me to go back to New York again! I also took pictures of the scenery and buildings that I can put into my art.” – Christian Hale
“My favorite part of the New York City trip was the different buildings we saw and, in the night, vibrant lights – everywhere was lit!” – Jordan Ross
“My favorite part of the New York City trip was EVERYWHERE. I say this because New York’s infrastructure and buildings, combining new architecture with old architecture, were just so amazing to me and made me feel at home. I realized that New
York is a place I was destined to be in due to its style and its wacky architecture and art. This trip inspired me to think big and expand my future vision. ” – Omari White
“The most memorable part of the NYC trip was going to the High Line and seeing all the beautiful flowers and futuristic buildings.” – Zya Watson
“One thing I learned by visiting the 5-year Bachelor of Architecture Programs was that Architecture can be a main part of many other fields of work. This trip inspired me to study Architecture more so that I can be a designer and maybe build something
in New York.” – Jeremiah Williams
“One thing I learned by visiting the 5-year Bachelor of Architecture Programs was there’s a lot that goes into architecture classes and pouring into the craft.” – Antonio Young
“This trip inspired me to lock in and get right” – Malachi Brown
