Markia Beckwith of Natural Born Champions hosted the second of a 3 part Family Matters workshop series Friday evening at Baltimore Design School. This series includes Mental Health, Financial Literacy, and Employment; three issues our BDS community identified as top concerns in their lives. Natural Born Champions connected with experts in each of these areas to create "a safe space to discuss and solve internal and external issues we face daily." Content is discussed at a level suitable for youth and adults alike, and while the workshops are fun and engaging, the team keeps it real and relevant. Participants weighed in by giving the workshops 5 out of 5 stars for content!
Ms. Sheena Dixon of Envoy Mortgage created an interactive workshop designed as a safe space for participants to learn about the importance of money and how to protect it and your family. Participants explored the importance of developing a financial plan, regardless of whether you're an adult with a salary or a youth with a part-time job a few hours a week and creating a budget with whatever amount of money you're working with. Students learned how to set aside money for emergency funds, savings and basic living expenses to set a system to be able to thrive within their means. "I loved creating the budget and the interactive activities," commented one student.
One participant "learned that your emergency fund is very helpful" and that we always need to be planning our financials. Another claimed that "this workshop is the start to financial stability."
Students earned 3 service learning hours for participating in this community event.
