Dear BDS Family,

With the guilty verdicts of Derek Chauvin yesterday in the murder of George Floyd, the jury demonstrated that police will be held accountable for their actions.  For too long, black Americans have been targeted and treated as “less than” by police, by leaders, and by society at large.  While justice was served, this simply cannot be the end.  We as a society need to do more to prevent similar events from occurring and to make the real and meaningful changes that are necessary to ensure that reform measures are put in place, racist mindsets are altered, and equal protection is afforded to all people.

We at Baltimore Design School will continue to build our equity mindset and work to uplift and protect our students, families, and communities in search of a better tomorrow.  We want to make certain that our leaders are held accountable and that the guilty verdict witnessed yesterday truly inspires change.  Today we will create space for students to share their thoughts about the verdict and reach out should they want or need to speak with someone.  Yesterday marked a step in the right direction, but this verdict is only one decision in the history of a country that has demonstrated and promoted racial injustice.  Let’s work together to ensure that we keep the spotlight on injustice, speak out against inequity and that the hope of today becomes the reality of tomorrow.
