BDS Students, Teachers and Parents participated in a panel discussion with the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education and BCPSS CEO -Dr. Sonja Brookins Santelises

BDS’ panel of students teachers and administrators demonstrated the school’s approach towards an innovative and impactful educational experience for our design scholars.


Yesterday Principal Brozene announced the visit of United States Deputy Secretary of Education, Cindy Marten, along with City Schools leaders including Dr. Santelises, Chief Dabrowski, and Chief of Staff Perkins-Cohen to the Baltimore Design School.  We are so proud of our 8th grade students. Aaliyah, Troy and Krissy, who were phenomenal ambassadors for the school.  Mrs. Monica Pilkerton and Mrs. Lyn Jones participated as parents of 10th and 11th grade students and spoke about their scholar’s experience and growth academically and socially/emotionally.  Ms. Krystal Brown (Verizon Innovative Learning Coach) and Mrs. Leah Hucker – Art/Design Faculty Department Head/Studio Art Teacher spoke on the innovative approach to skill-building BDS takes during our intervention period, with a special focus on math, ELA and social-emotional learning exercises.  Mr. Shannon Hayes – Professional School Counselor Chair/ High School Administrator and Principal Brozene pulled it all together by demonstrating that we are educating our youth holistically; fostering creativity, critical thinking and building design skills with an effort to expand diversity in the design professions.  The BDS team made us proud!

Today we were fortunate to have the United States Deputy Secretary of Education, Cindy Marten, along with City Schools leaders including Dr. Santelises, Chief Dabrowski, and Chief of Staff Perkins-Cohen visit our school.  They met with students, parents, and staff to discuss BDS intervention and tutoring programs along with after-school programming.  We were honored to have been selected for this visit and all guests were impressed by the work of our students and the support of our staff in building students to college and career readiness.  They were able to see our students and staff in action!!  Great work BDS!!  Below is a link to WBALs coverage of the visit.  Also check out social media posts for additional photos and reactions.
