Classes: HS Graphic Design
Background/Expertise in Content Area: This is my 11th going into 12th year of teaching. Teaching is my heart and my love, and I’ve earned a few accolades along this journey. Those include: Secondary Art Educator of the Eastern Region through the National Art Education Association in 2022 and Maryland Secondary Art Educator in 2020 through the Maryland Art Education Association. I was also a finalist for City Schools Teacher of the Year two times in a row and a semi-finalist three separate years.
Prior to teaching, I was a graphic designer at two firms in the city: Fastspot and Drexler. Graduating from MICA with my BFA in graphic design and my Master of Art in Teaching (MAT), I knew I was torn between going into the design industry and becoming an educator. My heart won out, and when I student taught at BDS the first year it opened, I knew I was home. Since joining the BDS team, I have continued my freelance graphic design/illustration career and completed a summer residency through the School of Visual Arts in their Illustration program. I also have a second home teaching in Berkeley, California, each summer through a non-profit organization called Girls Garage. In my art practice, I’ve illustrated for Showing Up for Racial Justice, the Baltimore Teacher’s Union, and the Baltimore Association of School Psychologists.
I joined the BDS family because… I see a need, in the design industry, to give access to everyone, no matter your gender identity or the color of your skin, and I’m hoping that our future designers will shake up the power dynamic that exists within graphic design for the better!
Fun fact about me: If it has wheels, consider my interest piqued. I roller skate and ride bikes (though not both at the same time unless you dare me) and am a frequent participant in Baltimore Bike Party — come out for a ride with me!
