Thanks to all of the scholars that participated in today’s virtual field trip with the Digital Harbor Foundation (DHF). They joined before school, on their own time, from 10am – 12pm and were excellent participants, asking really great questions and practicing the skills they were taught.

Ethan and Roman from DFH discussed what exactly 3D printing was, and the different materials that could be used, from cornstarch, to resin, metal to plastic compounds. They learned how human organs are being printed with this technology, for greater transplant success. They learned how 3D printing is THE future of fashion, with custom printed clothing and footwear that makes fitting more precise, and through a process called digital light synthesis, it’s actually faster to produce!

Architecture also utilizes 3D printing technology in everything from creating a prototype model of a design, to actually 3D printing structures to scale.

The instructors then walked students through a lesson on using Tinkercad and had students practice by designing and creating a key chain. We are excited for students to be able to experience this technology, albeit virtually, as we hope to have a tech lab, including 3D printing equipment, for students to take their design to the next level.

You can learn more about the virtual field trips that DHF is running here.
